Jim and Sharon research primarily at the renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, which has a remarkable Irish collection on microfilm. In fact, it's actually easier to do a good deal of the Irish research in Salt Lake City than it is in Ireland, as the records at the FHL are housed in one building.

The Irish collection at the Family History Library includes more than 11,500 rolls of microfilmed Irish records and over 3,000 microfiche collections. These include census, land, probate, military, both civil and church vital records (birth, death, and marriage), and many other genealogically-useful record types. While there is not complete record coverage for any locality or time period, it's more Irish research material in one place than can be found anywhere else. The library also has extensive map resources, and more than 3,500 reference books and periodicals covering Irish history, genealogy, geography, handbooks, directories, and more.

Over the twenty-five years they've been doing genealogical research, Sharon and Jim have each traveled to Salt Lake City regularly to work in this collection. But having daily access to the U.S. and Irish records and resources in this collection was such a compelling advantage that they permanently relocated their non-LDS, Irish-American lives and business to Salt Lake City at the beginning of 2007.

Remember, not all Irish records have been microfilmed and made available in the U.S., so we also make trips to Ireland once or twice a year to do additional research in both the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland and to locate ancestral homesites. Our next research trip to Ireland is planned for the fall of 2007.
