Welcome to the world of Ole's Genealogicals

You've wandered onto the home page of Ole Smirnoff Bernatelli. Don't expect typical genealogical writing from America's oldest living genealogist! (Ole's been around since 1897.) Though he was relatively unknown until 2004, he shot to fame when his column "Bringing Up the Rear" appeared in the NGS NewsMagazine.
Ole's Articles

Links are included above for three Ole columns from the NewsMagazine. The first two created lots of comments, both positive and negative, when they appeared. Some readers really enjoyed the column, while a few objected that Ole would dare bring humor to the pages of publication of the century-old National Genealogical Society. In response, the NGS Board banned the column from the NewsMagazine. As a result, Ole's third article was pulled from the December 2004 issue.

But you can judge for yourself! Click on the right to read Ole's columns, including the "Banned in D.C." column which now appears here for the first time. Simply click on the link below marked "December 2004."
